“I've led some unique kids. I watched some of them say 'yes' to Jesus for the first time. ... It's fun to watch those walls come down and watch them grow through Christ and with Christ. It's a cycle of goodness—somebody mentored me, and I am who I am today.” – Camp Counselor, Former Angel Tree Camper.

02/06/2022

“We lay out these rules—we love one another, we respect one another, we support each other, we have fun. You can usually tell which kids don't have that structure, or that love, in their life. And sometimes you get to see them come alive at camp. … They're coming from challenging backgrounds. You expect to have issues. But when you bring them into this circle of love, they aren't usually fighting or stealing. In fact, we blend the age groups in the cabins, and we ask the older ones to help the younger ones—remember your things, tie your shoes, don’t be late. It creates this family environment.”

“The girls loved it. It was their first sleep away camp experience and they realized so many other children have parents in prison. They feel less alone and less shame. …They both expressed a deeper connection to their spirituality, God and feeling watched over and protected. They were both more mindful of their love for each other. They have been working to get along and not hold so many resentments with each other. My daughters ask me constantly about going back. During the pandemic they had no friends. They met children like them, in the same situation and of all ages. They see how you can grow older and be ok, be successful and happy.” – Mom of Angel Tree campers.

Angel Tree Parent Days Inspire Incarcerated Moms and Dads

Angel Tree Parent Days Inspire Incarcerated Moms and Dads In July 2021, Prison Fellowship launched our first Angel Tree Parent Day, inviting incarcerated parents to learn more about Angel Tree.

“I met this one child in my group toward the beginning of it who wasn’t really talking with the other guys, wasn’t being friendly or joking or anything, and wasn’t being that responsive to me. But by the end of it, it was great. He started calling me Coach all day and hugged me before he left. … Just because your dad isn’t around, that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t love you, or that he doesn’t want you to be successful. I told him that I had to learn to play football and basketball on my own because my dad wasn’t there. But I looked for those other adults and mentors to fill in that role, for me to look up to.”

“Imagine, I only interacted with them once. And it had such a huge impact. Giving to Angel Tree is life-changing. They are planting that seed. Maybe at that moment they don’t realize it, but they could be an answer to prayer. A desperate caregiver could have said, ‘God, I didn’t envision my life this way. I didn’t ask to be a single parent.’ But then Angel Tree is God’s answer to her prayer.”

“This organization has a been such a blessing. I cannot put into words how much my heart is filled with joy and appreciation. The children never asked to be put in the position of their loved one not being here for days, months, years. Their faces on Christmas Day are priceless moments. All I can say is thank you.” – Caregiver.

“I think it’s the most excellent representation of Jesus Christ that anyone can do. Not only was I blessed, and not only were my children blessed, but their father in prison got to know that the people of Christ went out and delivered gifts to his kids in his name. That is the heart of Christ. God came down through Angel Tree and changed our lives forever.”

Nothing like that has ever happened for her in her whole life. … She has this little Bible that she got from Angel Tree, and I try to work with her on reading that. She prayed at our last prison visit, ‘God, I know my daddy is not always there, but I know his love is always there.’ And her daddy started crying.”
